Thomas J. “Tom” Taliano, a beloved 55-year resident of Vermilion, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 8, 2025, at Mercy Health Lorain Hospital at the age of 90.
Born in Lorain on October 5, 1935, Tom was the son of the late Dominic and Kathryn (nee Sheppard) Taliano. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1953B and then served in the US Army stationed in Alaska for two years.
Tom had a long career in construction, having worked for Griffith Blacktop and retiring from Kokosing Construction Company as an operating engineer. He was a member of St. Mary Parish in Vermilion.
His deep passion for boating and the boating community fostered many lifelong friendships. He enjoyed his membership in the Huron Yacht Club and was a 44-year member of the Vermilion Boat Club (VBC), where he dedicated his knowledge and leadership to the club over the years. At the VBC, Tom was a longtime docker and enjoyed boating aboard his boat, SNOOPY. He served many years as Dock Trustee, loyal to his responsibilities and fellow dockers' needs. While a member of Valley Harbor Yacht Club, Tom served as Commodore in 1978. As a Past Commodore, Tom was an active and proud member of the International Order of Blue Gavel at VBC. In November this year, Tom was honored to be the first recipient of the Vermilion Boat Club Legacy Award, in recognition of his decades of service, unwavering commitment, and the inspiring example he has set for all who follow.
Beyond boating, Tom had a zest for life, relishing bike rides, listening to Frank Sinatra, and enjoying a refreshing rum and Coke. His polished, nautical style and elegance defined him as the true gentleman he was. He also enjoyed his winter retreats to Benita Springs, Florida, which he and his late wife, Millie, had done for 25 years.
He leaves behind his loving son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Hilary, and their children, Brian and Sari, whom Tom loved spending time with, and his dearest companion, Roberta “Pinky” Richardson, who brought him loving joy.
Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in 2022 by his loving wife of 63 years, Emilia “Millie” Taliano (nee Zinitz).
The family held private services and sincerely thanks everyone for their kind condolences during this difficult time.
In memory of Tom, contributions can be made to the Vermilion Sail Education Foundation, PO Box 73, Vermilion, Ohio 44089.
