Thomas William Baxter

Thomas William Baxter, "P.O.T", age 77 of Lorain, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 6, 1926 in Connellsville, Pa, he was raised in Latrobe, Pa, before coming to Lorain in 1950.

He served two terms in the US Navy during World War II, partially under the command of Admiral Richard Byrd in the South Pole. He served as a yoeman aboard P.T. boat 382 in his first term, and as a mailman aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean in his second term. He also served aboard the USS Mount Olympus, and the USS Goodrich. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal with 1 star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars, and the Purple Heart Medal.

He retired as an operating engineer, having worked in construction for 15 years. Prior to this, he worked for Fruehauf Trailer Company, Avon, for 10 years.

He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 451, Lorain, and a life member of the American Legion Post 30, of Lorain. He was also a member of AARP.

He enjoyed restoring antique model T and Cadillac cars, coin collecting and playing cards.

Surviving is his daughters, Aimee Snow, and Pennie Baxter Malone, both of Elyria, son, Thomas, of Columbus, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, a sister, Betty Lou Rezek, of Elyria, and brothers, Robert, of Columbia, S.C., Jay, of Washington, D.C., and Colonel, of Naples, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Baxter, and Ossie Olia (nee Herrington) Baxter, sisters, Violet Assee, and Rose Pearl Wineland.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. Jim Fondriest, Chaplin of Cleveland Clinic Hospice, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. The Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 of Lorain will conduct full military honors.
