Sonia P. Garza

Sonia P. Garza (nee Pinero), age 74, of Lorain, died Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Cleveland Clinic in Avon following a lengthy illness.

Born November 20, 1948, in Juncos, Puerto Rico, she moved to Lorain in 1953.

Sonia graduated from Admiral King High School in 1967 and attended Lorain County Community College. She attained associate degrees in Arts and Applied Science Early Childhood Development.

Sonia had worked at All About the Kids Academy in Elyria.  Before to this, she worked at Oberlin Early Childhood Center and CEOGC Willard Head Start in Cleveland.

She was a member of Jehovah's Witness, South Lorain congregation, and volunteered many hours with Voices of Children. Sonia was passionate about food and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving are her sons, Pedrito "Pete" Garza (Anna Cordero) and Timothy (Lakeesha) Garza, both of Lorain; daughters, Josephine (James) Andrick of Lorain and Lori Phillips of Michigan; grandchildren, Courtney, Trevor, William, Janene, Jacob, and Brayden; great-grandchildren, Valentino, Mia, Elijah, and Arya; brothers, Jose Perez, Pedro Manuel Pinero, and Adam Pinero; sisters, Wanda Cruz, Yamine Gracia, and Tammy Johnson.

Sonia was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Pedro V. Garza, in 2006; parents, Manuel and Josephine (nee Perez) Pinero-Mendoza; sister, Maria Jones, in 2015; granddaughter, Felicia Garza, on January 8, 2023; and a great-grandson, Adrian Lorenzo, in 2018.
