Sherlie Ronzel “Shorty” Tanner, age 88, of Lorain, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026.
Born on November 24, 1937, in West Virginia, Sherlie lived a life rooted in faith, family, and quiet strength. Known lovingly to all as “Papa,” he was a steady presence, a gentle soul, and the heart of his family.
Sherlie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laura E. Tanner; his parents, Tressie and Russell Tanner; his sister, Glenna Vaughn; and his son, Walter Tanner.
He is survived by his children, Steve Tanner and Pamela Hellinger (Bill); his brothers, Arnold Tanner and Donald Tanner, both of West Virginia; his grandchildren, Anthony Tanner (Hali), Andy Tanner, Steven Tanner, and Anastasia Majoras (Mark); and his great-grandchildren, Autumn, Julian, Zephaniah, Xander, Mazelee, Dahlia, McKenzie, and Maelynn, who were the light of his life.
Sherlie retired from U.S. Steel, where he worked hard to provide for his family. He was a devoted member of Midway Baptist Church, where his faith guided his life and actions. Papa found joy in the simple things—tending to his garden, reading his Bible, and faithfully watching Wheel of Fortune.
He was loving, caring, supportive, kind, and sweet—qualities that defined every relationship he had. Papa was known for his gentle “Oh boy,” and for the tradition of wishing for “another year” each time he blew out his birthday candles. More than anything, he was immensely proud of his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved beyond measure.
Papa meant the world to our family. To know him was to feel loved, supported, and safe. His legacy lives on in the generations he cherished so deeply and in the countless lives he touched with his quiet kindness.
Papa will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
