Maria E. Melendez, (nee Ortiz), 74, of Lorain, died Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Elyria Memorial Hospital Regional Medical Center following a short illness.
She was born Dec. 5, 1932 in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico; she came to Lorain in 1959 where she has lived since.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain.
Maria was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, bingo, dancing and family gatherings.
Surviving are her sons, Fabian of Vermilion, and Jason of Lorain; daughters, Mary Diaz Albertini of Miami Beach, Florida, and Luz "Lonnie" Morell of Amherst; step son, Jose Antonio of Lorain; step daughters, Idez Melendez and Norma Melendez both of Corozal, Puerto Rico, Cruzita Miranda of Lorain; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Juanita Ortiz and Maria Dominga Ortiz both of Lorain, Cruza Ortiz of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Antonio in 1987; and her parents, Felix Ortiz and Maria (nee Aviles) Ortiz.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:45 am followed by mass at 11:30 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave, Lorain. Rev. James Schmitz, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
