Leo Sikorsky

Leo C. Sikorsky, age 88, of Lorain, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at his residence, following a short illness.

He was born on August 11, 1915 in Canal Fulton, Ohio, his family moved to Lorain three weeks later. He attended Nativity, Hawthorne and Lorain High Schools, graduating in 1933.

He was employed at US Steel in the metallurgical department for 42 ½ years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the US Steelworkers Union Local #1104 of America since its inception.

He was a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Lorain, where he ushered for 21 years and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He wintered in Florida for many years, and while in Florida, he was a member of the Catholic Church of the Resurrection.

At one time, he was an avid golfer and was secretary of the Elyria City Golf League at Cherry Ridge Golf Course for 12 years. He was a life member of the United Polish Club of Lorain, was a member of the 14th Street Gang Breakfast Club and a social member of Italian American Veterans. He was also member of the American Slovak Club and the Slovenian Home in Euclid. He was also a member of the Slovenian Style Polka Hall of Fame, in Euclid. In addition he was a member of United Steel Workers Golden Agers Pensioners Club.

Survivors include his loving companion of 27 years, Joan Goohs and sister Agnes Jenkins, of Lorain. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Proceeding him in death were his wife: Johanna (nee Durjava), in 1977. his father Constantine and his mother Anna (nee Jahnosz) Sikorski, sisters: Mary Cook, Sr. M. Margaret and Sr. M. Frances sisters of the Holy Family, brothers: John Sikorski, Justin Sikorski and Norbert (Pecks) Sikorski.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 26, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be held on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 a.m. mass at Nativity BVM Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. John Kline, pastor emeritus, of St. Marys Catholic Church, Lorain, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Robert Dybo, deacon of Nativity BVM Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Capital Improvements and Preservation Fund at Nativity Church, 418 W. Fifteenth Street, Lorain. Ohio, 44052.
