Kenneth R. Garrettson

Kenneth R. “Ken Ken” Garrettson, age 74, of Lorain, passed away at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 following a lengthy illness.

Born December 21, 1946 in Sutton, West Virginia, he moved to Lorain with his parents, Forrest D. and Edith (nee Knight) Garrettson in 1949.

Kenneth served his country during the Vietnam War in the United Stated Marine Corp for a little over three years, honorably discharged in 1969.  With the rank of corporal, Kenneth received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star, Vietnamese Campaign Medal with device (1960-), Presidential Unit Citation and Combat Action Ribbon.

He worked as a landscaper for Personal Lawn Care, retiring in 2006 after 10 years with the company.  Kenneth was a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lorain.  He loved watching all Cleveland professional sports and NASCAR.  He also had a passionate interest in space science and astronomy and had always dreamt of going to the moon.

Surviving is his loving wife of 49 years, Bertha (nee Ferguson); children, Kenneth Jr. of Elyria, Mary Gorell of Grove City, Sylvia Altemimi of Lorain, Angelina Shefton of Cleveland, Barbara Garrettson of Lorain and Andrew Garrettson of Norwalk; 15 grandchildren and a great granddaughter.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Roger Lynn Garrettson.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 22 from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral & Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain.  Burial with military honors will be held at a later date at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
