Joseph Venzel

Joseph Francis Venzel, age 82, of Lorain, died on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at his residence, while under the care of New Life Hospice, following a short illness.

He was born in Lorain and has been a lifelong resident. He was a 1940  B graduate of Lorain High School. Joseph served in the United States Navy during World War II. He received the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, American Area Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.

He was employed as a steel distributor for Lorain Works US Steel for over 40 years, retiring in March of 1981.

He was a member of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, where he was the past-president of the Church Council and usher, altar server and Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the churchs Holy Name Society. Joseph was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #451, of Lorain.

He enjoyed stamp collecting, coin collecting, golfing, bowling with the Over The Hill Gang and writing poetry for the Senior News Paper.

He is survived by his son: Robert Venzel, of Perrysburg, Ohio, daughter: Kathleen Rokasy, of Oberlin, and 5 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years: Julia (nee Kertesz) in June, 2002, parents: Joseph and Anna (nee Borocz) Venzel and brother: John Venzel in 1991.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 19, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where a Rosary service will be conducted by the Holy Name Society of St. Ladislaus Church at 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. mass at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, E. 29th and Wood Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. James Schmitz, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Veterans of Foreign War Post #451 will conduct full military honors.
