Joseph F. Makuch

Joseph F. “Joe” Makuch, age 81, of Vermilion, sadly passed away on Friday, October 30, 2026, at the Cleveland Clinic after a sudden illness.

Born on March 12, 1945, in Germany, Joe and his family immigrated to Ohio in 1950. He began his life in Sheffield before eventually settling in Lorain, and for the past 20 years, he called Vermilion home.

With a remarkable career as a millwright at Lorain Works U.S. Steel, Joe dedicated 54 years of his life to the company before retiring in 2021. His innovative spirit was recognized when he received an award for inventing a part that saved the company significant costs, showcasing both his skill and dedication.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion and the United Steelworkers Union Local 1104.

Joe found joy in life's simple pleasures—fishing, camping, spending time at the beach, and watching the sunsets. He had a special affection for old western movies, leisurely drives, and the excitement of air shows.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his sons, Joseph Makuch Jr. and adopted grandson Matthew Makuch; daughters Pamela Meeker, Barbara (James) Smith, Kimberly Makuch, Loria Makuch, and Lisa Makuch; 24 adoring grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Joe is also survived by his beloved sister, Olga “Helen” Hunt; and his supportive brothers, Myron Hohil and Steve Hohil. Joe was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 61 years, Judith “Judy” Ann Makuch (née Kesterke), who passed away in 2025; his parents, Frank T. Makuch and Adela (née Swavaloski) Hohil; grandson Jasyiah Jerrian Boone; sister Irene “Raina” Hamill; and son-in-law Richard Meeker.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 2, 2026, from 2:00 PM until the funeral service at 6:00 PM at Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, located at 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain.
