Jane Ellen Vanderpool, age 82, of Amherst passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2025, at Mercy Hospital Lorain following a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1943, in Lorain, Ohio. Jane graduated from Lorain High School in 1961A and earned her nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Practical Nursing. She worked 45 years as a nurse and retired from Metro Hospital, embracing her well-earned retirement by spending time with family, exploring her hobbies, and sharing her infectious laughter with all who knew her. She was known for her generous heart, her quick wit, and her ability to fix or make just about anything, the true definition of a "handy grandma."
Jane lived by the saying, "It is what it is," a reminder to accept life's challenges with strength and grace, something she truly embodied every day. She loved to square dance, play games on her computer, and craft, whether it was crocheting or painting pottery.
She is survived by her daughter, Ellen McGarvey of Amherst; sons, Vernon "Butch" Jr. (Kim) Vanderpool of Brunswick and Todd (Shawn) Vanderpool of Ashland; her sister, Nancy Lorence of Amherst; brother, Alan Lorence (Sharon) of Grafton; Adam Cabranes of Amherst, who was like a son to her; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Vanderpool Sr.; her parents, Albert and Rhonda Lorence; and her sister, Dorothy Six.
Jane will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her strength, warmth, and unwavering love. A wonderful mother and grandmother, she would move to the ends of the earth to help those she loved and leave a legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion that will be cherished for generations.
A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain.
