George Matyas, Jr., age 73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Mercy Health Hospital in Lorain. He was born in Lorain on February 13, 1948, and has been a lifelong resident of the city.
George was employed and retired from the International Boilermakers, Local 744 as a welder. Georges’ hobbies included being an avid pilot, gambling at the casinos, avid motorcycle rider, history enthusiast, and the builder of the Memorial Pearl Harbor wall that is located on 28th Street in Lorain. George also was an avid collector of antique gas station memorabilia. His greatest hobby of all was spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen (nee Seskar) of Lorain; daughters, Nicole (Jason) Lance and Christa (Joshua) Beere; grandchildren, Alexis, Alesha, Jaeden and Jared; great-grandchildren, Sergio (Peanuts) and Izabel (Izzy); sisters, Kathleen Stuckert (Stan Lake) of Florida, Shirley (Homer) Hill of West Virginia, and Rose Matyas (Jim Skorvanek) of Nevada; step-sisters, Jo Ann Koviak of Elyria, Frances Hevener and Marion Hluszti both of Wellington, along with Betty Ann Lane of North Carolina.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George Matyas Sr. and Veronica C. (nee Smith) Matyas; brothers, Samuel Matyas, Stanley and Michael Yourkvitch; and a step-sister Linda Grosso.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 11th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Parish, 3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
