Densil G. Smith passed away on September 1, 2026, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, Ohio, after a lengthy illness. He was born on July 11, 1948, in Morgantown, West Virginia.
He attended Lorain High School and later graduated from Admiral King and, soon after, was drafted into the Army. Following his service, he built a long and steady career, working for nearly 40 years at US Steel in Lorain, Ohio. His years there reflected a life marked by dedication, perseverance, and commitment to his work and community.
Outside of work, Densil found enjoyment in simple and lasting pleasures. He enjoyed coin collecting and loved to fish. He also took great pride in his family, and he especially enjoyed watching his son at racing events, a pastime that brought him happiness and cherished memories. He also enjoyed watching Ohio State and Cleveland Browns games as well as the Cleveland Guardians.
He is survived by his daughters, Valerie Davison and Tamara Heidrich; his son, Brian (Rebecca) Smith; his stepdaughters, Vivian (Robert) Bertram, Roberta Wolford, and Regina Register; his sister, Carol (Rick) Behnke; a daughter-in-law, Barbie Smith; as well as 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren as well as his nieces and nephews. Their lives carry forward his memory, and they will remember him with love and gratitude.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Irene Smith; son, Michael Smith; his daughter, Melissa “Missy” Jones; a grandchild, Hope Smith; his father, Fay Smith; his mother, Mary McMillen-Smith; his brothers, Carl McMillen and Carlos Collins; and his sisters, Patty Wells and Erma Ison.
Visitation will be held on September 9, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Dovin Funeral And Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Ave, Lorain, Ohio 44055. The funeral service will follow there at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, 44805 N Ridge Rd, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
Densil G. Smith will be remembered for his years of hard work, his service to his country, and the enjoyment he found in the people and pastimes he loved. His memory will remain with all who knew him.
