Arturo “Art” Garcia, age 89, of Lorain, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Mercy Health Lorain Hospital.
Born September 1, 1936, in Lorain, he lived there his entire life. He was a 1955 graduate of Lorain High School.
Art entered the US Air Force in 1955 and served for 4 years, then continued serving in the reserves until 1963. Following the service, he traveled throughout Mexico, visiting his relatives, reflecting his strong family ties.
Upon his return to Lorain, he worked for the Lorain Morning Journal for a couple of years before embarking on a 40-year career in the printing and circulation departments at The Chronicle Telegram in Elyria. Following retirement, he continued to work part-time for Lifecare Ambulance, Lorain County Metro Parks, and MedEx Medical Transport, and he volunteered with the Lorain City Schools transportation services.
Art was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain, Mexican Mutual Society, Mexican American Society, Amvets Post 47, and American Legion Post 30. He achieved many milestones throughout his life, including running in marathons and coaching and mentoring children in Little League Baseball. He enjoyed reading, particularly The Chronicle Telegram, watching boxing, following the Cleveland Browns, and league bowling. Art enjoyed gardening and planted an acre of vegetables, including jalapeños and corn. He loved taking his dog for walks daily.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Amelia (nee Torrero); children, Ruben Garcia (Becky Anderson) of Huron, Roxanna Alvarez of Lorain, Lisa (Dale) Osborn of Brownhelm Twp., Ruben Garcia of Lorain, and George (Stacy) Corona of Cleveland; 7 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; a brother, Ruben (Olga) Garcia of Avon; and a sister, Estella Garcia of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Condrado Moctezuma and Carmen (Sandoval) Garcia; brothers, Roman Garcia, John Garcia, and Rudolfo Garcia; sisters, Anna Marie Gere, Theresa Delgado, and Raymond Garcia; and son-in-law, Eddie Alvarez.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of services at noon in the Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain, with military honors.
