Abelino "Al" Lopez

November 10, 1918 — August 26, 2015

Abelino "Al" Lopez Sr., 96, of Lorain, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Avon Oaks Skilled Nursing Facility, Avon, following a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 10, 1918 in Rockdale, Texas, he came to Lorain in 1947. Al served in the US Navy during World War II.
He worked as a car spotter in the screening station of the coke plant at Lorain Works US Steel for 33 ½ years where he was known as the "Royal Hawaiian", retiring in 1983.
Al was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, the Guadalupe Society of the church, and the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.
He enjoyed traveling, big band music and dancing. His life philosophy was family unity, always make the best of it and "stick together".
He is survived by his sons, Fred (Shirley) and Ruben (Marilyn) both of Lorain, Richard (Lucy) of N. Ridgeville; daughters, Gloria Gonzales of Russia Township, and Felisa (Tom) Shannon of Lorain; grandchildren, Fred Lopez Jr., Jerry Lopez, Kathy Lopez, Joseph (Len) Gonzales Jr., Barbara (Al) McConihe, Tony Lopez, Alana (Andy) Wourms, Lisa (Roy) Moye, Michelle Lopez, Aaron (Heather) Lopez, Bryan (Denise) Lopez, Adam Lopez, Alexandria (Matthew) Michalski, Callie Lopez, Jim Shannon and Sam Shannon; 24 great grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margarita (nee Villarreal) in 1990; parents, Salome and Felipa (nee Luna) Lopez; a son, Abelino in 2014; and brothers, Robert, Salome Jr. and Concepcion; and a granddaughter, Veronica Lopez-Cox
The family will receive friends on Monday from 2:00 - 7:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 8:45 am in the funeral home followed my mass at 9:30 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. William Thaden, pastor will officiate. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain will be private.
