John M. Sluk, of Sheffield Village, died peacefully at home on October 12, 2013, with his loving partner Diane by his side. He was 57 years old.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh PA, John graduated in 1979 from the University of Pittsburgh with a Master of Library Science degree and embarked on a 31-year career in academic librarianship, specializing in technical services. He held department head positions within the library systems of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Oberlin College. A quintessential cataloger, John approached his work with a dedicated passion, understanding its rules and complexities as few catalogers ever do.
John taught as well, training hundreds of staff members at various academic libraries for the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) in association with the Library of Congress. He was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Science and was at his happiest teaching cataloging to library science students.
In addition, John was a member of the PCC BIBCO Operations Committee for several terms and a member of Beta Phi Mu. He also served as a member of the editorial board of Cataloging & Classification Quarterly, contributing several articles to the publication.
Upon retiring in 2011, John continued to enjoy his love of reading, music, and gardening, as well as all things Pittsburgh Steelers. An avid walker, John relished exploring local nature preserves and the many cities he visited with Diane during their travels.
He is survived by his partner Diane Kajganich, mother June (nee Christy), brother Jim (Jeannie) of Pittsburgh PA, and sister Joanne Coudriet (Donald) of Reno NV. Children Abigail, Andrew, Emily, Peter, and Martin, a grandson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Andrew and brother Roy.
A private service and burial will be held on October 18th, 2013. A public memorial service will be held on November 9th at 10:30 a.m. at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Lorain, Ohio.
